The activities arranged in prisons consist of work, education or other activities improving prisoners’ abilities. Their purpose is to promote prisoners’ reintegration into the society.
Participation in activities advances prisoners’ abilities to live without crime, maintains or improves their work skills and competence as well as working and functioning capacity, and supports substance-free lifestyle. Prisoners are obliged to participate in activities arranged or approved by the prison at the confirmed working or activity hours.
The activities are planned together with the prisoner in a sentence plan, which is based on a risk and needs assessment made in the assessment and allocation unit for prisoners serving a longer sentence. The aim is to influence the problems related to prisoners’ life control, education history and working and functioning capacity emerged in the assessment by placing them in suitable activities.

During recent years, the prisoners’ possibilities to participate in activities aimed to decrease their use of intoxicants or re-offending have been especially increased. In order to guarantee a continuum after release, prisons have co-operation with authorities of the prisoner’s home municipality.
About two thirds of prisoners participate daily in work, education or other activity.
Under certain conditions a prisoner has a possibility to go to work or study outside prison. A prisoner may also be placed in rehabilitation for a short period outside prison."
